Granvin kyrkje

Granvin kyrkje

Kirke, religion&livssyn

The church and the churchyard is situated by a hairpin bend in the road that is so sharp that it can only be explained by way of love for the church and respect for God. In the loft, you'll find a beehive-shaped church bell, cast in 1050 and is one of the oldest in the Nordic countries. The present timber church was built in 1726. Both the soapstone font and the crucifix on the south wall of the nave are from the Middle Ages. The church interior is decorated with rose painting by Lars Osa (father to Sigbjørn Bernhoft), and Nils Bergslien painted the altar. Open on request. Guided tours.

Grindheim Kirke

Grindheim Kirke

Kirke, religion&livssyn

In Grindheim, as at Støle, we are able to observe the connection between the church, the cemetery and a pre-Christian burial ground. This was the largest burial site in Etne with more than 200 burial mounds. Today most of it is cultivated farmland and only some large mounds now remain in the fields. To the far south is a large site with minor mounds dating from the Bronze Age. The timbered medieval church was built in 1728. Its old interior is still intact and the church bells date from 1628 and 1751, respectively. By the north wall stands a 3.75m runic stone, which was found in the cemetery wall. It is a memorial stone from about 1050 with a carved cross and the runic inscription: "Tormod erected this stone in honour of Tormod Svidade, his father". The stone cross in front of the church dates from the period immediately after the Christianisation of Norway. Open Sundays: 10.00-13.00. For guided tours, please contact Church office, tel. 53 77 11 70..

Stødle Kirke

Stødle Kirke

Kirke, religion&livssyn

In Stødle, as at Grindheim, we are able to observe the connection between the church, cemetery and a pre-Christian burial ground. The long church was the Viking chieftain Erling Skakke's private chapel from about 1160. The stone section was built in Romanesque style, and the timbered nave was extended around 1650. An altarpiece and a crucifix from 1636 can also be found here. The baroque pulpit dates from about 1600 and the two church bells from the Middle Ages. In front of the church is a burial mound and stone monument. On the edge of the large Stødle terrace, with its magnificent view over Etne parish and the fjord, about 15 burial mounds remain today. These were erected for the people of Stødle farm, and excavated finds bear witness to continuous habitation from the Bronze Age to the Viking Age, a period lasting some 2000 years. Helgaberget (Holy Rock) at Stødle is covered with rock carvings. Information board. Ample parking. Open Sundays: 19.00-13.00. For guided tours, please contact Church office, tel. 53 77 11 70.
